On March 11, 2020, Inside Higher Ed published an article that Cathy N. Davidson and I coauthored in response to the current coronavirus crisis, #CovidCampus, and the like, titled, “Transforming Your Online Teaching from Crisis to Community.” In the article, we write:
“The biggest takeaway from the research on effective teaching online is that we cannot teach the same way online that we would in person: we need to innovate and use the tools available to us to build our class periods differently…”
The article offers one quick and easy way to create community and engage students in active learning online. We also share important resources for teaching online:
- Considerations for Instructional Continuity by the Teaching and Learning Center at the Graduate Center, CUNY
- Effective teaching online, a guide for teaching online published by IHE in 2017
- Hybrid pedagogy at LaGuardia Community College
- Teaching in the context of COVID-19 compiled by HASTAC’s Jacqueline Wernimont and Cathy N. Davidson
- Sharing, Collecting, Discussing — All Possible With Padlet by Professor Shiao-Chuan Kung at Hunter College, CUNY
